A New Toolkit to Embed Circularity into Office Fitouts
The Better Buildings Partnership (BBP), of which GECA is a proud supporting member, in collaboration with Aurecon and the Green Building Council of Australia (GBCA), has designed and delivered a Circular Fitout Toolkit for Offices.
The toolkit offers practical, concise guidance to equip fitout project teams with circular economy strategies and approaches that can be integrated into their fitout design.
This toolkit combines circular fitout fundamentals with practical design guidelines to equip fitout project teams with circular strategies and approaches that can be integrated into their fitout design. Although it is primarily designed for fitout design teams, owners, and occupiers, it can be used by anyone involved in a circular fitout. The toolkit has also been carefully designed to complement the GBCA’s evolving Green Star – Interiors tool: Green Star Fitouts.
As businesses and brands constantly evolve and spaces are reconfigured, office fitouts can be notoriously wasteful. Design techniques are defined without consideration of disassembly and material choices without proper sustainable assessment, and stripouts occur before the end of the product or component’s service life.
By adopting circular principles to increase the functional life of regularly replaced products and components, office fitouts in Australia can become more sustainable and economically viable. This toolkit aligns with GECA’s aim to support Australian businesses in eliminating waste and pollution, circulating products and materials (at their highest value), and regenerating nature.
The material and product choice section of module 4 – outlines the role of ecolabelled products, such as those that carry the GECA ecolabel, within a circular fitout. Long-standing GECA licensee Luxmy Furniture’s certified Luxboard is featured as a circular case study.
This toolkit is primarily designed for fitout design teams, owners and occupiers – but can be used by anyone involved in a circular fitout. Modules 1 and 2 are recommended reading for anyone beginning a circular fitout journey.
