What is the NABERS Waste Platform and how can it help your building play a role in the transition to a circular economy?

Jul 3, 2024

NABERS (which stands for the National Australian Built Environment Rating System) is a NSW Government program that provides simple, reliable and comparable operational measurement of a commercial building’s sustainability performance. NABERS ratings are trusted across various building sectors like offices, apartments, hotels, shopping centres, data centres and more.

Over the last 20 years we have proven that “what gets measured gets managed” and our rating system has driven financial growth and solid returns in portfolios across building sectors by clearly demonstrating their operational performance. By having your building’s performance third-party validation improves confidence and transparency as you can share your NABERS rating with staff and tenants.

The NABERS Waste tool provides measurements of how well a building manages its waste generation, recycling and resource recovery, and supply chain management. Compare buildings within your portfolio and improve your waste performance year on year.

The NABERS Waste Platform is available for all building types and measures how well the people in buildings separate waste into streams that can be composted and recycled. The platform tracks your building’s waste data month to month and converts it into useful management insights. It can assist you in identifying areas for future improvements and help drive progress towards a circular economy.

We developed this online platform to make it simpler to understand your waste data. The platform provides visibility of the waste streams leaving your building and your recycling rate. These insights should lead to improvements and may improve your recycling performance. The dynamic dashboard also makes it easier to share visual, actionable insights with staff, tenants and other stakeholders.

The platform can be used to monitor:

  • Recycling rate
  • Material stream composition
  • Waste intensities
  • Frequency of waste collections
  • Volumes or weights collected
  • Waste collection costs

The NABERS Waste Platform provides the basis for the Waste Verification and Waste Rating tools.

If you’d like to learn more about the NABERS Waste Platform and how it can help you understand your waste data and track and improve your waste management practices, please come visit the NABERS stand at AWRE on 24 and 25 July. We can take you through a live demonstration of how the platform and the visual, dynamic dashboard works and answer any questions you may have about how NABERS Waste can support you and your organisation on your circular economy journey.
