Zero Co – leading innovation towards a circular economy thanks to Bin Trim

Getting rid of single-use plastic from your kitchen, laundry & bathroom is easy with Zero Co

Zero Co sells personal-care and home-cleaning products using an innovative order, return and refill system. With the help of a Bin Trim assessor, Zero Co commissioned the design and construction of a cleaning machine that enabled their product pouches to be washed and reused, introducing refillable pouches.

How Bin Trim helped

A Bin Trim assessor visited the business to assess their waste. They estimated volumes of material that would otherwise go to landfill and developed an action plan with the Zero Co team. Zero Co had specific needs and with an innovative idea developed a solution supported by their assessor – a plastic pouch washing machine. The design and construction of the machine was supported by a Bin Trim rebate of $50,000.

Results

The new equipment enabled the refillable pouches to be washed, reused and refilled to be returned to customers multiple times. Once the pouch washing machine cleans and sterilizes each pouch, they can be refilled and sold as a replacement pouch. As pouches wear out, they are being recycled into delivery envelopes, removing the need for new envelopes.

The numbers

Bin Trim rebate: $50,000

New equipment: Pouch recovery machine

Approx. 73.49 tonnes of waste to be diverted from landfill annually, with expectations to grow as the company works towards higher return rates and continues to expand.

The benefits

  • Less waste going to landfill
  • Lower waste disposal costs
  • Repeated reuse of pouches, reducing the need for new plastic pouches to be produced.
  • Old pouches are recycled into envelopes
  • Innovation to solve a business-specific waste issue.
