APCO attends AWRE to provide an update on Australia’s 2025 National Packaging Targets and looking beyond 2025 for packaging circularity

Jul 26, 2023

As the organisation charged by Australian Ministers to lead the 2025 National Packaging Targets.

APCO recently released the Review of the 2025 National Packaging Targets report, a comprehensive document which outlines the current state of Australia’s progress towards the 2025 Targets and the actions needed to accelerate progress to 2025 and beyond.

Thursday 27 July | 10.30am to 11:15am – Packaging over two horizons

APCO’s CEO Chris Foley will be attending AWRE to discuss Australia’s relationship with packaging over two horizons. Horizon One deals with the current voluntary National Packaging Targets while Horizon Two deals with the need for a stronger co-regulatory framework to improve environmental outcome, strengthen compliance, protect public interest and ensure accountability across the packaging system while supporting innovation, competition and investment.

APCO’s Australasian Recycling Label – the crucial link between Australian businesses and consumers

The Australasian Recycling Label (ARL) Program is an on-pack labelling scheme that is helping consumers to recycle correctly and supporting brand owners and packaging manufacturers to design packaging that is recyclable at end-of-life.

Thursday 27 July | 12:45pm to 1:15pm – ARL and Recycle Mate are collaborating to provide leading recycling advice

Recycle Mate is a dynamic recycling education platform that combines artificial intelligence technology with Australia’s most comprehensive recycling directory to reduce contamination in recycling systems, improve resource recovery and support a circular economy.

APCO has partnered with Recycle Mate to bring together all the benefits of a static on-pack label with a dynamic recycling information service. Supporting optimal recycling behaviours during a transitionary phase as our industry moves to a circular economy for used packaging.

How can a static on-pack label and a dynamic recycling information service align to support an evolving recycling industry and a transition to more sustainable packaging formats?

Recycle Mate is dynamic – it communicates local recycling rules, it provides granular and current information to consumers as recycling systems evolve, as trials are implemented, and new schemes are rolled out. It provides kerbside advice and directs people to away from home recovery options.

The ARL is our end goal – an on-pack label to provide the most easily accessible recycling/disposal advice for packaging formats accepted with consistent collection schemes nationally supported by mature recycling markets. Recycle Mate is helping to navigate the transition.

Thursday 27 July | 3.00 pm to 3.30 pm – Australasian Recycling Label (ARL) and how it cuts out consumer recycling confusion

APCO, the AIP, AFGC and NRA are working together to help raise the profile of the value that the ARL brings to all sized businesses, the environment and consumers. This session will provide updates on

the ARL, the Marketplace and the new tools and resources available for everyone to access to embed ARL on their packaging, one pack at a time.

Speakers to include:

  • Nerida Kelton FAIP | Executive Director, Australian Institute of Packaging (AIP)
  • Bonnie Marshall | Policy Officer, National Retail Association (NRA)
