AWRE Day One at Sydney’s ICC – All Sorted!

The first day of the Australasian Waste & Recycling Expo (AWRE) at Sydney’s Darling Harbour has wrapped up with important discussions held over two stages and both visitors and exhibitors excited for what lies ahead tomorrow.

All speaker sessions were packed to the brim today. Opening the speaker was KarMei Tang, Acting Executive Director, Waste Strategy and Policy NSW Department of Planning, Industry and Environment, who presented opportunities and examples of the circular economy in NSW.

‘The Future is Recycling’ was discussed via a prestigious panel including Executive Director of the Waste Contractors & Recyclers Association of NSW, Tony Khoury, State General Manager NSW of SUEZ Australia & NZ, Tony Grebenshikoff, Director Programs Circular Economy, Department of Planning, Industry and Environment, Kathy Giunta, General Manager Resource Recovery NSW of Veolia Australia & NZ, Christine Hodgkiss and Chief Operating Officer if IQ Renew, Graham Knowles.

APCO CEO Brooke Donnelly led a discussion concerning benchmarking for the 2025 National recycling targets and a distinguished panel discussed the use of glass in the road reuse market.

Drawing upon almost 30 years’ experience, UNTHA shredding technology’s Director, Gary Moore discussed if Refuse Derived Fuel and Process Engineered Fuel has a role to play – or not.

On the Food Waste Stage, Dr Steven Lapidge opened by surprising the audience with opportunities that food waste presents at the local, national and global scales. Coles Head of Energy and Sustainability showed how Coles has halved its food waste. Founder and CEO of Yume Foods, Katy Bartfield, walked through how innovative technology is tackling the growing issue of food waste. Plus two panels discussed the broader issues concerning food waste and the role of packaging in minimising food waste.

On the show floor there was a full circle of innovative products and sustainable solutions to collect, process and recycle waste more smartly. Future critical areas included Machinery & Equipment, Software & Services, Bins, Vehicles and Food & Organics.
