ORG becomes the first to certify under GECA’s national Waste Collection Services standard

Oct 23, 2019 Organics

We’re thrilled to announce that Organic Recycling Group (ORG) has become the first business in Australia to be certified under GECA’s national Waste Collection Services (WCSv1.0i-2018) standard.

In collaboration with the Better Buildings Partnership (BBP) and NABERS, we developed this standard to set a sustainability benchmark for services collecting waste from the point of collation and collection to a lawful processing or disposal facility.

Waste generation in Australia has increased significantly during recent years, and some waste is still poorly managed, resulting in significant impacts on health, local and global environments and the economy. Increasingly, waste generators and waste collection services acknowledge the risk of poor waste management.

The standard aims to improve the accuracy and transparency of waste collection data, resulting in better sustainability performance and supporting service providers’ efforts to minimise their impacts.

“We’re so excited that our new standard gives government and private sectors across Australia the opportunity to choose certified waste collection. This will reward those doing the right thing, drive good data, cut contamination, and ensure recycling gets to the right place,” said Kate Harris, GECA’s CEO.

In August, we welcomed ORG as our first licensee under the new standard. ORG began operating in 2006, specialising in the collection of organic waste and dedicated to helping the environment by diverting organics away from landfill. We would also like to acknowledge GPT for their encouragement to GECA and ORG in support of the standard.

ORG’s GECA certified waste collection currently services:

  • 580 George Street, Sydney
  • 6 Pirrama Road, Pyrmont
  • Norton Plaza, 55 Norton Street, Leichhardt
  • Quad 1 & Quad 4, 107 Parkview Avenue, Sydney Olympic Park

“The team at ORG are proud to be part of a business that is continually working to exceed our targets, this standard has enabled the team to have further confidence in our abilities to deliver leading waste management services to our clients,” said Jim McBurney, General Manager at ORG.

Through certification, waste collection companies will be able to demonstrate their transparency, quality of service, and accurate data for reporting. This enhanced credibility can strengthen relationships with existing clients and increase the potential for new clients and contracts.

“If you’re committed to doing things better tomorrow than we did yesterday…then you must get behind the GECA standard. For consumers of waste services, it is a trust marque that says these guys get it and GECA will hold them to account. For waste contractors it is a badge of honour and a market differentiator,” said Esther Bailey, BBP.

ORG will be exhibiting at this month’s Australasian Waste and Recycling Expo (AWRE) at stand E12. Team GECA will also be exhibiting at stand A37 promoting our wonderful licensees along with our suite of sustainable solutions.
